CALHOUN HOPES TO KEEP ADVANCING IN STATE HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL PLAYOFFS

In a high school baseball playoff update, the Calhoun Yellow Jackets baseball team split a double header with Lovett yesterday, forcing a third game in their third-round playoff series.  Calhoun won yesterday’s first game 3-2, while Lovett won the night cap 2-0.  Game three is set for today at 3 pm in Calhoun.

ROME BRAVES DROP SERIES OPENER TO AUGUSTA GREENJACKETS

The Rome Braves lost to the Augusta Greenjackets 1-0 in the series opener between the teams last night in Augusta.  The only run scored in the game came in the bottom of the fourth when Ben Thomas reached on an error.  He was driven home on a single to left from Elliot Blair.  Rome actually out hit Augusta 7-6, but wasn’t able to nab the win last night.  Kevin Couture got the win and Cody Hall got the save for Augusta, while Rafael Briceno was tagged with the loss for Rome.  Last night’s loss marks the 13th in a row for the Rome Braves; they have yet to nab a win in May and now have a 6-29 record for the season.  The Braves will try, try again tonight as they face the Greenjackets in game two of their four game series at Augusta’s Lake Olmstead Stadium.  First pitch is set for 7:05 pm.  The game will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.  Rome Braves radio voice JB Smith will go on the air with the pre-game show at 6:50 pm.

ATLANTA BRAVES FALL TO CINCINNATI REDS AT ‘THE TED’

The Atlanta Braves lost to the Cincinnati Reds 3-1 last night at Turner Field.  The Braves picked up what turned out to be their only run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sac fly from Martin Prado that scored Michael Bourn to tie the game up.

ROME-FLOYD SPORTS HALL OF FAMER CULBERSON DIES AT 91

A Rome sports legend has passed away.  JM Culberson died yesterday at the age of 91.  He was inducted into the Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.  Culberson was signed to the New York Giants baseball team and played with minor league affiliates in Jacksonville, Florida and Jersey City, New Jersey before coming back to Rome to play in the textile leagues until they ended.  He also served for 20 years as a football official for the Georgia High School Association.

CULBERSON MAKES MAJOR LEAGUE DEBUT WITH SF GIANTS

Former Calhoun High School baseball standout Charlie Culberson made his major league debut yesterday with the San Francisco Giants.  He went 1-for-4 in the Giants’ 7-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Rome Braves’ series closer against the Asheville Tourists scheduled for yesterday at State Mutual Stadium has been postponed due to rain.  It will be made up as part of a double header on Thursday, May 24th at 5 pm.

ATLANTA BRAVES COMPLETE THREE GAME SWEEP OF ST. LOUIS CARDINALS, TOP NATIONAL LEAGUE EAST

The Atlanta Braves completed a three game sweep of the defending World Champion St. Louis Cardinals yesterday with a 7-4 win at St. Louis’s Busch Stadium.

ROME BRAVES BACK HOME TODAY AFTER 0-7 ROAD TRIP

The Rome Braves took the day off yesterday after completing a seven game road trip in which they lost four games to the Hagerstown Suns in Maryland and then lost three more to the Greenville Drive in South Carolina.  They’ll lick their wounds and hope to have home field advantage as they welcome the Asheville Tourists to State Mutual Stadium for a four game series that begins today and continues thru Sunday.  The Braves and the Tourists will play an early Education Day game today at 10:30 am.  It will be broadcast on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.  Rome Braves radio voice JB Smith will go on the air with the pre-game show at 10:15 am.
