COLLEGE BASKETBALL WEEKEND UPDATE: SHORTER SWEEPS AT BREWTON PARKER, BERRY FALLS TO YOUNG HARRIS
In your local college basketball update from over the weekend, Shorter University had a victorious day in Mount Vernon, Georgia against Brewton Parker on Saturday. The 22nd ranked Lady Hawks beat the Lady Barons 77-48. That netted the number two seed for the Lady Hawks in the upcoming Southern States Athletic Conference tournament, set for February 29th thru March 3rd at the Forum in downtown Rome. The number one Hawks picked up a 90-63 win over the Barons, allowing the Hawks to claim their first ever SSAC East Division title. The Hawks, who now have 26 wins and two losses overall this season with 15 wins and one loss in the SSAC, nabbed the number one seed in the SSAC tourney and are pretty much guaranteed a trip to the NAIA national tournament next month. The Shorter men also reached a couple of milestones on Saturday as head coach Chad Warner notched his 100th career win and forward Walter Hill surpassed 1,000 career points. Shorter’s basketball teams will get back into action at home against SSAC rival Lee University on Thursday night. The women will play at 6 pm, followed by the men at 8 pm. Berry College’s men and women dropped a couple of games at Young Harris College on Saturday. The Lady Vikings lost their match 84-50. The Vikings lost theirs 89-74. Berry’s basketball teams will close out the 2011-2012 regular season tomorrow night as host to Covenant at the Cage Center on the Berry College campus. Tip off is set for 6 pm for the women and 8 pm for the men. The games will be broadcast on WLAQ AM 1410 and www.wlaq1410.com.
