SOUTHERN STATES ATHLETIC CONFERENCE MEN’S AND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS CONTINUE IN ROME THRU SATURDAY
The Southern States Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships got underway in Rome yesterday and continue thru Saturday. Women’s action was held at Darlington School yesterday, while the men played at the Forum downtown. The Forum will be the site of the semifinal and final rounds for both the men and women for the next couple of days.
Shorter’s Lady Hawks continue in the women’s tournament today at 2 p.m. against Southern Poly. Shorter’s Hawks have been knocked out of the men’s tourney. Follow the Shorter Lady Hawks as long as they are in the SSAC tourney on 95.7 FM The Ridge and www.theridge957.com.

GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR HOLDS OPEN HOUSE FOR CEDARTOWN CAREER CENTER
The Georgia Department of Labor held an open house ceremony for its new Career Center in Cedartown on Thursday. The center is located at 262 North Park Boulevard. The 9,062 square foot facility offers employment-related services to employers and job seekers alike, in addition to user-friendly access to vocational rehab customers. The center features two training rooms and a business center. It also provides accommodations for staff members of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), which offers on-the-job training services to job seekers.
State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond was at the open house in Cedartown. He has said of the center, “The new Cedartown Career Center will enable our staff to better serve job seekers, employers and vocational rehabilitation clients in Polk and Haralson counties.”
The center is open Monday thru Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

TELLUS MUSEUM IN CARTERSVILLE TO HOST LECTURE FROM GEOLOGIST MARK LASSITER THIS EVENING
The Tellus Museum in Cartersville will continue its lecture series this evening at 7 p.m. with Professional Geologist Mark Lassiter. Lassiter will discuss his mountain climbing and cave exploration around the world. The museum will be open extended hours until the lecture this evening, according to marketing director Joe Schulman. MEMBERS OF NATIONAL GUARD TO RETURN TO ROME TUESDAY
Members of the Rome’s National Guard Troop, Company A, are expected to be back in town early next Tuesday afternoon. The group is a part of the Calhoun based 108th Cavalry and returned to Georgia earlier this week. They are currently at Fort Stewart in Hinesville. A special homecoming is planned for the group on Tuesday.
