TASK FORCE CONTINUES THEIR EFFORTS TO BETTER SERVE THE HOMELESS IN THIS COMMUNITY

The Homelessness Task Force met on Thursday morning to continue efforts towards better serving the homeless in this community.

Devon Smyth, Executive Director of the Davies Homeless Shelters, says that the task force has been divided into five subcommittees tasked with exploring solutions related to short term as well as long term homelessness, homeless  families, addiction and mental illness.

The task force is using the results of a 2009 study on homelessness in Rome and Floyd County as a reference point for their work.

This effort to better serve the needs of the homeless has resulted in formation of the HOPE Alliance, a coalition of non-profit organizations and community partners whose goal is to reach out to the unsheltered population.

Smyth adds that members of the alliance now go out on Monday mornings to provide coffee, breakfast, clothing and other needs to the unsheltered.

The Homelessness Task Force will hold their next meeting on the morning of Thursday, November 7th.
