GEORGIA’S ROME OFFICE OF TOURISM TO BOOST PROGRAMS, EXHIBITS AS NEW MANAGERS OF ROME AREA HISTORY MUSEUM

The Georgia’s Rome Office of Tourism took over management of the Rome Area History Museum at the beginning of this year. Kristi Kent, Director of Communications for the tourism office, enthuses that a host of new programs and exhibits will be offered this year to educate Romans on local history.

Kent indicates that the public is invited to attend a “Lunch and Learn” at the museum on Thursday, February 27th at noon. Guest speaker Larry Lester, the co-founder of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, MO, will be the keynote speaker. Former players from around this area will participate in a panel discussion at the event.

Lunch will be catered by Doug’s Deli. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online at www.RomeGeorgia.org/LunchandLearn.

Lester will deliver a lecture later that evening at Berry College. The lecture, entitled, “Only the Ball was White”, will get underway at 5 pm at McAllister Auditorium. This is intended to commemorate the centennial of professional black baseball here in the US; it has been 100 years since the founding of the Negro National League in February 1920.

The Rome Area History Museum is open every Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm. It is located at 305 Broad Street. To learn more, visit www.romehistorymuseum.org.

The monthly “Rome Area History Museum Volunteer Coffee Break” returns to the museum this morning at 10 am.
