LOCAL RED CROSS IS SAVING LIVES WITH ‘SOUND THE ALARM’ SMOKE ALARM CAMPAIGN

The American Red Cross of Northwest Georgia aims to make sure that those in need have smoke alarms. The potentially life-saving devices are installed by Red Cross volunteers and community partners at homes around this local chapter’s service area, free of charge, via the Sound the Alarm campaign.

Leigh Barba, Executive Director, asserts that you have under two minutes to escape your home in the event of a fire. Smoke alarms are essential to inform you of any danger and potentially save lives.

Eight lives were saved from a blaze in Walker County around Christmastime, thanks to the program, adds Barba. A little boy inspired by fire engines urged his family to have a smoke alarm installed in their home. The local Red Cross helped them out. It was because of this smoke alarm that the family was later able to safely escape the fire that destroyed their home. The little boy, by the way, wants to be a fireman when he grows up.

If you are currently in need of a smoke alarm, reach out to the American Red Cross of Northwest Georgia; the Rome office is located at 112 John Maddox Drive. Information is also available online at www.redcross.org. Rome and Floyd County residents may also obtain smoke alarms through the Rome Fire Department; call (706) 236-4500.

The American Red Cross of Northwest Georgia now serves 15 counties, as it recently added Dawson and Pickens Counties to its service area.
