Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful conducted their annual Litter Index on Monday. It is required by Keep America Beautiful, according to KRFB Director Emma Wells. The effort to gauge the community’s appearance has historically taken place during the summer, but it was moved to late winter/early spring for the past couple of years; this offers volunteers a better view of roadside litter that could be hidden by tall grasses during the summer months, says Wells.
Wells indicates that she and her volunteers searched for things such as illegal signs, grafitti, outdoor storage, and junk vehicles. The litter rating decreased slightly from 2019 to 2020.
The annual Litter Index gives KRFB a better idea of where litter education and prevention programs are needed in the community.
