THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATES DECLINED IN JUNE FOR ROME AND NORTHWEST GEORGIA

Mark Butler, Georgia’s Labor Commissioner, reports that the unemployment rate for Rome declined in June.

Rome’s unemployment rate stood at seven percent last month for a decrease of 1.9 percentage points from the previous month. The rate was four percent in June of 2019.

The number of jobs rose in Rome by 1,100 from May to total 42,000 in June; that number was also up by 200 compared to the same time last year.

Initial unemployment claims in Rome dropped over the month by 33 percent, but rose over the year by about 1,641 percent.

Northwest Georgia’s unemployment rate declined last month to 6.6 percent, a decrease of 1.8 percentage points from the previous month. The rate was 3.7 percent in June 2019.

First-time claims for unemployment across the region declined by 36 percent over the month, but were up by about 2,341 percent over the year.

Communities across the state continue to see stinted yearly growth due to the effects of COVID-19, although monthly gains in nearly all major sectors are starting to spike, according to the Georgia Department of Labor.
