DR. SUE TURNQUIST IS FLOYD COUNTY SCHOOLS’ 2021 TEACHER OF THE YEAR

Dr. Sue Turnquist, a fifth grade science and social studies teacher for Model Elementary School, has been named the Floyd County Schools Teacher of the Year for 2021, according to an FCS media release.

This marks Dr. Turnquist’s 20th year as a teacher at MES and her 24th year as an educator for FCS. She was previously named a district finalist for TOY in 2003 and 2017.

Each school nominated an individual Teacher of the Year by May 2020. Since the state competition has been postponed due to COVID-19, the teachers that wanted to participate in the district-level competition answered questions by video submissions which were viewed by a panel of community partners that then voted anonymously to choose two semifinalists from every grade band. The teachers with the most votes were selected as finalists. Most grade-level Teachers of the Year were present at the regular meeting of the Floyd County Board of Education in October, at which they were celebrated with applause, certificates, and some gift bags (courtesy of Coosa Valley Credit Union). The top three finalists were announced; the winner was surprised with a standing ovation from the entire room.

The other finalists for FCS Teacher of the Year included Heather Boaz from Armuchee Middle School and Michael Watson at Pepperell High School.
