A total of 4,257 new cases of coronavirus were reported across Georgia on Wednesday by the state’s Department of Public Health, along with 52 more virus-related fatalities. Three of those fatalities were reported here in Floyd County.
According to the latest report by the DPH issued just before 3 pm, there have been 488,338 confirmed cases of COVID-19 statewide. The state’s death toll now stands at 9,302. In Floyd County, there were 5,893 confirmed cases and 97 fatalities. Fulton County had the state’s highest number of confirmed cases with 43,693 and the most deaths with 709.

The DPH indicated in an update on COVID-19 trends in Georgia released on Wednesday that the seven-day average of new cases reported increased by 13 percent from December 7th to 14th. That average was up by 18 percent from a previous peak on July 24th. The DPH asserts that these weekly increases may appear small; however, they reflect this state’s highest case numbers yet. The statewide positivity rate rose by 10 percent from 12 percent on December 7th to 13.2 percent on December 14th. Daily hospitalizations increased 18 percent from 2,502 on December 7th to 2,968 on December 15th. Floyd County is still among the counties statewide with high transmission rates, as are most of the counties around Northwest Georgia.
The state’s first doses of Pfizers’ COVID-19 vaccine arrived down in Coastal Georgia earlier this week, some were delivered to Atlanta on Wednesday, and more are on the way. Moderna’s vaccine is slated to ship next week, pending Emergency Use Authorization by the US Food and Drug Administration.
