FIRST DAY HIKES SLATED FOR FRIDAY, JANUARY 1ST (RAIN OR SHINE)

Locals will have opportunities to kick off 2021 with a First Day Hike, in spite of a rainy forecast to begin the New Year.

Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation invites the public to take part in a hike that is set for Friday, January 1st at 9 am at Lock and Dam Regional Park, located at 181 Lock and Dam Road in Rome. Mary Hardin Thornton, RFPR’s special services manager, states that the event will be held rain or shine. Participants will have a couple of hiking options that cover the primitive campground and the Coosa River Nature Preserve.

Thornton adds that people have spent more time exploring the great outdoors this year. Participants in the New Year’s Day hike will have an opportunity to learn about the parks, trails, facilities that exist around the community.

Hikers will assemble in the parking lot of the Coosa River Trading Post. The fee of $5 for each hiker will be collected prior to the hike. Dogs are welcome to join. Humans will be treated to hot chocolate at the conclusion of the hike. There will also be a birdhouse installation by the Boy Scout Pack 113 over at the primitive campground.
