The Floyd County Board of Education has voted to close both Cave Spring Elementary and Glenwood Primary Schools upon the conclusion of the 2021-2022 school year. The votes were cast during the school board’s first meeting for 2021 on Monday evening in the auditorium of Coosa High School, which went live and can still be viewed on the Floyd County Schools, Georgia page on Facebook.
Dr. Tony Daniel, Chairman of the Board, stated that the decision to close the schools was based on a need for fiscal responsibilty by the school system as a whole. He also expressed appreciation for feedback received from both Cave Spring Elementary and Glenwood Primary supporters.
Board member Danny Waits emphatically cast his vote against the closure of Cave Spring Elementary, stating that it was the lone school remaining in that community.
Upon the closure of the schools, Cave Spring Elementary students will head to Alto Park Elementary. The students from Glenwood will attend Armuchee Elementary.
In other business from Monday evening’s school board meeting, Daniel was selected to serve again as Chairman. Melinda Strickland will continue on as the Vice Chair.
