MICKLER: IT MAY BE WINTER, BUT IT IS STILL A GOOD TIME TO WORK OUT IN THE GARDEN

It may be Winter, but it is still a good time to work out in the garden, asserts Keith Micker, University of Georgia Extension agent for Floyd County, who recommends that gardeners take this time to till their ground (unless it is too moist).

Gardeners are also encouraged by Mickler to submit a sample for a soil test to determine their lawns’ health, which may be arranged by calling the UGA Extension office at (706) 295-6210. The cost is $9.

And now is a good time to get your tools ready for Spring, like lawnmowers, says Mickler.

Mickler’s tips for this time of year also include checking lawn and gardening equipment and taking care of any necessary repairs.

Trees and shrubs may be planted at this time, and preparations may be made for roses, according to Mickler, who adds that the dormant season is a perfect time to prune.

Mickler states that the first frost of this Winter in Floyd County was recorded on November 3rd. The final frost of last Winter was back on March 18th. The average last frost is on April 15th.
