ATLANTA BRAVES OPEN SERIES WITH WIN OVER PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

The Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-5 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia; that was the third straight win for the Braves, who are now back at .500.

Ronald Acuna Jr, William Contreras, and Austin Riley all hit solo home runs. Riley’s homer tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the eighth inning.

The Braves took the lead with four more runs in that inning to include a two-run single by Acuna.

Sean Newcomb was credited as the winning pitcher for Atlanta Starter Drew Smyly gave up three runs (two earned) and five hits, walked three, and struck out none over four and one-third innings.

Bryce Harper and JT Realmuto each had solo home runs for the Phillies, for whom Connor Brogdon took the loss.

The Braves improved to 29-29 on the ’21 season and are now two and a half games behind the first-place New York Mets in the NL East. They’ll continue their division series versus the Phillies tonight at 7:05 pm. That game will be broadcast on WLAQ 1410 AM and 96.9 FM; air time is 5:50 pm.
