Greater Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 445 E. 14th Street in Rome, will host a Juneteenth Celebration this Saturday from 4 pm until 7 pm. The event will feature historical highlights, voter registration, coronavirus vaccines, and free food. It will be hosted in conjunction with the Rome-Floyd County branch of the NAACP.
President Joe Biden signed legislation on Thursday to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday. The observance commemorates the declaration from Union General Granger on June 19th, 1865 that the slaves of Texas had been set free.
