GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR: UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WAS UNCHANGED IN ROME, UP SLIGHTLY FOR NORTHWEST GEORGIA IN MAY

The Georgia Department of Labor has announced that Rome’s unemployment rate was unchanged from April to May at 3.6 percent, down from 9.6 percent in May 2020.

Rome ended May 2021 with a total of 40,700 jobs, a number which remained flat from April but up by 2,600 in comparison to May 2020.

First time unemployment claims decreased by 34 percent over the month and by about 89 percent over the year.

Both the labor force and number of employed residents decreased in the past month in Rome, but were up over the year.

Mark Butler, State Labor Commissioner indicates, “This is a step in the right direction, but we need to continue to get Georgians back to work. Increasing the amount of people in our labor force is critical for us to continue to improve.”

Northwest Georgia’s unemployment rate was 3.3 percent last month, up from 3.2 percent in April but down from 8.7 percent in May 2020.

Initial unemployment claims across the region decreased by 28 percent over and by about 89 percent over the year.
