PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS CONCERNED ABOUT INCREASE IN THE DELTA VARIANT OF COVID-19

Public health officials are concerned about an increase in the Delta variant of COVID-19. Dr. Gary Voccio, the Health Director of the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Northwest Health District, states that the Delta variant now accounts for over 12 percent of confirmed cases of the virus in Georgia. It is anticipated that the number will soon rise to 30 percent.

Dr. Voccio attests that this variant is more transmissible; however, it may be prevented by the COVID-19 vaccines currently available.

Those who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 stand a better chance of avoiding illness and even death due to the Delta variant, says Dr. Voccio, who aserts that the vaccination rate has slowed over recent days around Northwest Georgia.
