SOARING TEMPERATURES, HIGH HEAT INDEX VALUES CONTINUE IN NWGA; HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON HOW TO STAY SAFE!

The dog days of August continue in our region with soaring temperatures and high heat index values. Right now is a great time to stay indoors if possible, says Shasta Farrer, Life and Fire Safety Educator for the Rome-Floyd County Fire Department, who urges anyone who must work outdoors to limit activity to the early morning or late evening hours. And be sure to pace yourself!

In the midst of this summer heat, don’t forget to hydrate and wear sunscreen.

And, urges Farrer, never leave children or pets unattended in hot cars – even for a moment.

Farrer also states that it is important to know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and what to do in the event of either.

Floyd County residents got a bit of a break from the heat with some showers and thunderstorms that moved into this area on Wednesday evening, leaving some without power. Today’s highs are anticipated to be in the mid 90s with heat index values as high as 102. Skies will be partly sunny with the chance for more showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
