ATLANTA BRAVES OPEN SERIES IN COLORADO WITH WIN OVER ROCKIES

The Atlanta Braves defeated the Colorado Rockies 6-5 on Thursday night in the opener of a four game set at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado; that ended a three-game losing streak for Atlanta.

The Braves took a 3-0 lead with a solo home run by Jorge Soler in the top of the first inning and a two-run double by Austin Riley in top of the third. But the Rockies struck back with five runs during the bottom of third, including a grand slam by Charlie Blackmon. Atlanta assumed the lead once again in the fifth on a sac fly by Dansby Swanson and a two-run homer by Adam Duvall, his 30th home run of the season. Here are Joe Simpson and Ben Ingram with that call, courtesy of the Atlanta Braves Radio Network.

Jacob Webb was credited the win in relief for Atlanta, and Will Smith picked up his 30th save of the ’21 season. The Braves’ starting pitcher Touki Toussaint gave up five runs (four of them earned) and six hits, walked none, and struck out none over just three innings of work. Colorado’s reliever Yency Almonte took the loss.

The Braves improved to 71-62 and maintain a two-game lead in the National League East over the second place Philadelphia Phillies. They will continue their series in Colorado with game two versus the Rockies tonight at 8:40 pm. That game will not air on WLAQ 1410 AM/96.9 FM due to coverage of high school football. WLAQ will, however, air coverage from the Atlanta Braves Radio Network of the final two outings of that series this Saturday night and Sunday.
