The Atlanta Braves fell to the Colorado Rockies 5-4 on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game National League series at Truist Park.
Freddie Freeman got the Braves on the board first in the back-and-forth affair with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. But the Rockies assumed the lead in the top of the second on a solo home run from Trevor Story and an RBI single from Garrett Hampson. Dansby Swanson hit an RBI double in the fourth that tied the game at 2-2. However, Colorado broke that tie with a two run homer by Brendan Rodgers in the fifth and added another run on a sac fly from Rio Ruiz during the sixth. Adam Duvall put the Braves within a run of the Rockies with a two run blast in the bottom of the eighth.
The Braves had an opportunity to tie it up (or take the lead) in the bottom of the ninth with Ozzie Albies on first base and Eddie Rosario at second, though Jorge Soler flew out to center to end the ballgame.
Touki Toussaint was charged with the loss for Atlanta after surrendering four runs and five hits, walking three, and striking out five in only four innings of work. Jon Gray was credited with that win and Carlos Estevez picked up the save for Colorado.
The Braves fell to 76-67 on the season, but maintain a four and a half game lead in the National League East over the Philadelphia Phillies (who also lost on Tuesday night). They will face the Rockies again this evening at 7:20 pm. The game will be broadcast on WLAQ 1410 AM and 96.9 FM; air time is set for 6:05 pm.
