GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF LABOR: ROME, NWGA SEE HIKE IN UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Rome recorded an unemployment rate of 2.3 percent, up three-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 5.2 percent. Despite this, Rome saw highs in labor force, number of employed, and jobs in the month of December.

“Job numbers are up across Georgia, and our focus in 2022 is encouraging people to enter the workforce to help businesses provide the goods and services necessary for Georgia’s economy to continue to grow,” said Commissioner Mark Butler.

The labor force increased in Rome by 237 and ended the month with 43,889. That number is down 99 when compared to December of 2020.

Rome finished the month with 42,897 employed residents. That number increased by 119 over the month and is up by 1,196 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Rome ended December with 41,700 jobs. That number increased by 200 from November to December and increased by 1,000 when compared to this time last year.

The number of unemployment claims went up by 37 percent in Rome in December. When compared to last December, claims were down by about 91 percent.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 914 active job postings in Rome for December.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that all 12 regional commissions in the state recorded increases in unemployment rates. Despite this, claims were down in the Atlanta, Coastal Georgia, Heart of Georgia, Middle Georgia, River Valley, and Southwest Georgia Regional Commissions.

“Job numbers are up across Georgia, and our focus in 2022 is encouraging people to enter the workforce to help businesses provide the goods and services necessary for Georgia’s economy to continue to grow,” said Commissioner Mark Butler.

The labor force saw an increase in all regional commissions.

Employment was up in the Atlanta, Central Savannah River, Coastal Georgia, Northeast Georgia, River Valley, Southwest Georgia, and the Three Rivers Regional Commissions.

Northwest Georgia Regional Commission – Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Haralson, Murray, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield counties.

  • The December preliminary unemployment rate was up two-tenths to 2.1 percent o-t-m, the rate was 4.7 percent one year ago.
  • The labor force was up 965 o-t-m and up 6,135 o-t-y, to 425,402.
  • The number of employed was down 138 o-t-m and up 16,830 o-t-y, to 416,297.
  • Initial claims were up 327 (29%) o-t-m and down 13,923 (-90%) o-t-y, to 1,474.
  • Initial claims were up o-t-m in Trade and Construction, and down o-t-y in Manufacturing and Accommodation and Food Services.
  • There were 5,788 jobs posted on Employ Georgia.
