CHIEF VANN HOUSE TO CELEBRATE SPRINGTIME AT SPRING PLACE ON APRIL 30TH

(Media release from Chief Vann House Historic Site):

On Saturday, April 30 from 10a.m. to 4p.m., we’re celebrating springtime at the Chief Vann House with activities such as flower painting (paint and brushes provided), a birding hike, a tree identification hike, a pollinator program with a craft and activity, a beekeeping table, nature bingo for small prizes, and more. These outdoor activities are designed to educate guests about native plants used by the Cherokee, contributions of Moravian botanists that once thrived here at Chief James Vann’s early 19th century plantation, and all the glorious pollinators of springtime.

Keynote speaker Eric Jackson, Director of Horticulture at the Old Salem Museum and Gardens in Winston-Salem, NC.  is highlighting the day with his presentation “Moravian Gardening, Forestry, and Botany.” This lecture will be live and virtual in the Vann House museum. At Old Salem, Eric oversees a vast collection of plants and trees once used by the Moravian settlers that bravely opened schools and missions within the historic Cherokee Nation. Moravian’s have a long history in sustainable farming practices, even going so far as to hire the first Forester in North America in 1759. In his lecture, Eric will discuss these Moravian gardening techniques and 19th century Spring Place botanist, Anna Rosina Kleist Gambold.

Guest hosts include the Friends of the Vann House, the Chattooga County Garden Club, Gary Pender of “A Colonial Experience,” Beaver’s Family Farms, local birder Josh Spence, Forestry Ranger Blake Lovell, and the Old Salem Museum and Gardens. Check our website or Facebook for a full schedule of events and activities.

Guests are invited to finish off the day by touring the Vann House in the final weekend of our Historic Map Exhibit.
