The Rome Area Writers want to help senior citizens assemble their memoirs for the enjoyment and education of generations to come. They’ve scheduled a memoir workshop series for those age 60 and older over the summer.
Paul Culotta, Vice President, attests that participants will receive everything they need to preserve their memoirs. And they will become members of the Rome Area Writers as a bonus.
According to a release from the organization –
Rome Area Writers, a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting writers and celebrating the art of writing, is hosting a memoir workshop series for senior citizens 60 years of age and older. This workshop series will give seniors the tools, skills, and knowledge they need to write their memoirs and pursue their personal writing projects. The workshops will run each Saturday from June 4 to July 16, skipping the July 4th holiday weekend.
Georgia Author of the Year winner Francine Stewart will lead each workshop class. Stewart, who has written more than 20 books, now specializes in teaching memoir writing. She will teach each class in person, using her own workshop methods where each class builds upon previous lessons.
At the end of the program students will have the skills and knowledge they need to pursue their own memoir projects. Although students will not have a finished book at the end of the class, they will have the inspiration and confidence to tackle their memoirs and write a book that is unique to each of them, reflective of their lived experiences, and an enjoyable exploration
of their lives. Each student will receive membership in Rome Area Writers, which will give them access to a supportive writing community.
Tuition for the entire course is $25. The Northwest Georgia Regional Commission Area Agency on Aging graciously provided a grant that covers the entire instructor tuition fee. This grant allows Rome Area Writers to offer a $150 course for only $25. Attendees will receive a copy of The Art of Memoir by Mary Karr in addition to the educational materials created by
Francine Stewart.
Each class will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in west Rome from 10 a.m. to noon.

Rome Area Writers was founded in 1999 with the motto “writers helping writers.” It has published The Lavender Mountain Anthology , a collection of members’ fiction, essays, non-fiction, poetry, and excerpts from larger works, annually since 2000. The group welcomes speakers from across the nation and now meets both in-person and via Zoom. Rome Area Writers welcomes anyone, of any skill level and any genre, who is interested in the art of writing.
