NATIONAL CHAMP RETURNS TO MODEL HIGH SCHOOL FOR BIG BLUE CAMP

A women’s college basketball national champion was on hand this past week for Model High School’s Big Blue Camp. Victaria Saxton, Model alum, was instrumental in the South Carolina Gamecocks win in the ’22 NCAA National Championship Game.

Saxton recalled in an interview which aired on WLAQ’s ‘Later This Morning in Rome’ earlier this week that it was ‘like a dream’ to hoist the trophy back in April. People from her MHS days were on hand for that occasion.

Saxton, who graduated from Model in 2018, indicates that in making the transition from high school to college, she was challenged by the notion that nothing comes easy, you have to work for it.

That is a valuable lesson to pass on to the rising Kindergarten thru 8th Grade girls that attended this year’s Big Blue Camp.

Floyd County Commissioners honored Saxton for her role in the Gamecocks’ championship win during the final day of the camp on Thursday.

The full interview with Saxton and Model’s head girls’ basketball coach Sally Echols, which originally aired Wednesday, June 8th on ‘Later This Morning in Rome’, may be heard online at www.wlaq1410.com.
