AUSTIN RILEY MAKES HISTORY IN ATLANTA BRAVES WALK-OFF VICTORY OVER ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS, ROME BRAVES DROP SERIES FINALE AT HICKORY, NC TO CRAWDADS

The Atlanta Braves closed out the month of July with an exciting walk-off victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks by 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game set at Truist Park. That allowed the Braves to sweep the weekend series.

Austin Riley made Braves history with a game-winning, walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning; that was his 26th extra base hit of the month, passing the previous record of 25 set by Hank Aaron in July of 1961.

Atlanta’s closer Kenley Jansen was credited with the win. Starting pitcher Max Fried gave up just four hits, walked a pair, and struck out five through seven scoreless innings of work. Mark Melancon, a former Brave, took the loss for Arizona.

The Braves improved to 62-41 on the ’22 season and are still in second place of the National League East, still three games back from the division-leading New York Mets (who defeated the Miami Marlins on Sunday). They have a scheduled night off tonight and will return to action on Tuesday evening with the first match of a two-game division set versus the Philadelphia Phillies at Truist Park. First pitch is slated for 7:20 pm. Listen on WLAQ 1410 AM or 96.9 FM; air time is 6:05 pm.

In a minor league update, the Rome Braves lost to the Hickory Crawdads by 11-10 on Sunday in the final outing of a six-game set up in Hickory, NC. The Crawdads took the series 4-2. Rome is off tonight and will be back in action at home on Tuesday evening with the first of six games versus the Greenville Drive. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm.
