The Atlanta Braves defeated the Washington Nationals 3-2 on Tuesday night in the middle outing of a three-game National League East set at Truist Park. That marked the fifth straight victory for the Braves, who clinched a playoff berth a short while later as the New York Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers. If Milwaukee had beat New York, the Braves would have been tied with the Mets for first place in their division (though Atlanta would have had to wait a bit longer for that postseason berth).
Travis d’Arnaud got the home team on the board with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Nationals scored their first run of the night when Joey Meneses reached home plate on a throwing error by Vaughn Grissom. Dansby Swanson gave the Braves a 3-1 lead with a solo home run in the eighth.
The Nats once again came within a run of the Braves with an RBI single by Luis Garcia off Kenley Jansen in the top of the ninth. But the Braves held on for the victory, again, by a final score of 3-2.
Charlie Morton was credited with the win for Atlanta after giving up one run and three hits, walking three, and striking out nine through five and one-third innings. Jansen secured the save. Erasmo Ramirez was charged with the loss for Washington.
The Braves improved to 93-55 with 14 games remaining in the 2022 regular season. They will wrap up their series against the Nationals (and a six-game homestand) this afternoon. The first pitch is slated for 12:20 pm. The outing will be broadcast on WLAQ 1410 AM/96.9 FM; airtime is 11:05 am.
