The Atlanta Braves finished a six-game homestand on Wednesday afternoon with a loss to the Washington Nationals 3-2 in the last match of a three-game National League East set at Truist Park, which denied Atlanta a sweep of the series. The Braves went 5-1 on their homestand and remain one game behind the division-leading New York Mets, who fell to the Milwaukee Brewers a bit later in the day.
The Braves took advantage of a throwing error by Paolo Espino to score one run during the bottom of the first inning. They added another run on an RBI single from Ronald Acuna Jr in the second. The Nats got on the board with a sac fly by Lane Thomas in the top of the fifth and surged ahead on a two-run homer by Joey Meneses in the seventh.
Jesse Chavez was charged with the loss for Atlanta. Andres Machado got the win and Kyle Finnegan picked up the save for Washington.
The Braves are now 93-56 with just 13 games remaining in the 2022 regular season. They will open up a seven-game road trip this evening with the first of four NL East outings in Philadelphia against the Phillies. The first pitch is slated for 7:15 pm.
