FULL SLATE OF MLK WEEKEND ACTIVITIES TO BE HIGHLIGHTED BY ANNUAL FREEDOM MARCH ON MLK DAY

The life and legacy of late Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be honored this weekend during the 2023 MLK Weekend Celebration hosted by the MLK Commission of Rome/Northwest Georgia.

Activities will include a talent and showcase at the Rome City Auditorium on Friday night, a family prayer breakfast in the Life Center of Lovejoy Baptist Church on Saturday morning, and an ecumenical service on Sunday evening at First United Methodist Church.

The highlight of the weekend will be the Freedom March down Broad Street on Monday. Participants are asked to gather at the corner of Broad and First Streets at 11 am. The march will begin at 11:30 am and will make its way to the Rome City Auditorium for a noon program. Lunch will be provided over at the Rome Civic Center after the program.

Alvin Jackson, co-chair, says that marches were among the tools used by Dr. King to promote his message of peace and unity for people of all races.

Co-chair Sundai Stevenson, Rome’s Mayor, says that Dr. King’s message of non-violence is needed now more than ever.
