The Atlanta Braves were defeated by the defending World Series champion Houston Astros 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game set at Truist Park. That allowed the Astros to sweep the series.
Things got off to a great start for Atlanta with Max Fried on the mound. He gave up just three hits, walked three, and struck out five in six and two-third scoreless innings. The home team struck first with a solo home run by Kevin Pillar during the bottom of the fifth and added another run during the sixth as Austin Riley reached on a fielder’s choice and Ronald Acuna Jr. scored on a throwing error. However, the Astros struck back with five runs off the Braves bullpen in the eighth and ninth.
AJ Minter was charged with the loss for Atlanta. Hector Neris picked up the win, and Bryan Abreu got the save for Houston.
This past weekend marked the first time that the Braves have been swept on their home field since 2021.
The Braves maintain a narrow lead in the National League East with a record of 14-8. They will continue their current seven game homestand tonight with the opener of a four-game division set against the Miami Marlins. First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 pm.
