FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2023 FOCUSED ON COOKING SAFETY

The National Fire Protection Association is spearheading the observation of Fire Prevention Week, which started on Sunday, October 8th and will continue through Saturday, October 14th.

According to the NFPA, Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which started back on October 8, 1871 and caused devastating damage. The horrific conflagration killed over 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned over 2,000 acres of land.

This year’s campaign is focused on Cooking Safety, states Shasta Farrer, Life and Fire Safety Educator with the Rome/Floyd County Fire Department, who adds that the fire prevention education is aimed at learning from tragedies of the past to (hopefully) prevent a similar tragedy from ever happening again.
