GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH’S NORTHWEST HEALTH DISTRICT DIRECTOR REPORTS A DROP IN FLU ACTIVITY IN RECENT WEEKS, FOLLOWING A POST-HOLIDAY SPIKE

The Georgia Department of Public Health’s Northwest Health District reports a decline in the widespread flu activity with which the state entered 2024.

Dr. Gary Voccio, Health Director, asserts that this decrease follows a spike in reported cases of the flu after the holidays. Coronavirus cases have also been on the decline in recent days.

There have been 18 flu-related deaths in Georgia so far this season, and 10 of those were people over the age of 65, according to Dr. Voccio.

Flu season will continue for another month or so, says Dr. Voccio, who adds that it is still a good idea to get a flu vaccine at this time. Individuals struck with the flu or coronavirus are urged by Dr. Voccio to take medication.

Here are other tips from the Georgia Department of Public Health to prevent the spread of flu and other illnesses:

  • Frequent and thorough handwashing with soap and warm water.
  • Use an alcohol-based gel if you don’t have access to soap and water.
  • Cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow or arm.
  • Avoid touching your face as flu germs can get into the body through

mucus membranes of the nose, mouth, and eyes.

  • If you are sick, stay home from school or work. You should be free of a fever, without using a fever reducer, for at least 24 hours before returning to school or work.
