Model High School students, led by Jessica Kennedy, competed in the AA state literary competition over the weekend where they represented Floyd County Schools well.
Junior Sara Grace Abernathy won her second consecutive state literary competition in International Extemporaneous Speaking. In addition to her first-place accomplishment, Abernathy also earned a second-place finish in Literary Analysis Essay.
Emi Kate Ashworth, MHS junior, brought home a fourth-place finish in Humorous Interpretation.
“The team this year did very well and I was excited that these two young ladies (Abernathy and Ashworth) qualified for state,” said Mrs. Jessica Kennedy, MHS Literary Coach. “ It’s a long day of writing and performing and then waiting for results, but they both kept their spirits up and were so encouraging towards each other. There’s a lot of hard work that goes into preparing for Extemporaneous Speaking. Students are given broad topics and have to research current events for all of those topics and SG was on it. Her judges actually stopped her in the parking lot to praise her for being so confident and knowledgeable. Emi Kate prepared a nine-and-a-half minute play where she alone acted as six different characters. These ladies are not only hard workers, they want everything to be perfect so they go above and beyond. I’m very proud of all that they have accomplished.”
Mrs. Kennedy also credits and is very thankful to both Mrs. Rachel Jones and Dr. Rob Thompson for the success of the literary team. Mrs. Jones preps the essay writers and extemporaneous speakers, while Thompson coaches the Dramatic Interpretation students.
Model High School competed in the 7AA region literary competition on March 8 where they were co-region champions.
Armuchee, Coosa, and Pepperell competed last weekend in the A state competition. Results from that competition can be found here.
