ONE FLOYD COUNTY JUNIOR NAMED GOVERNOR’S HONORS STATE FINALIST AND THREE SELECTED AS ALTERNATES

(Media release from Floyd County Schools, GA):

Eight Floyd County Students interviewed/auditioned at the state-level competition for the Governor’s Honors Summer Program. Out of those eight, one student has been selected, and three students were put on the alternate list.

Thomas Patterson, a junior from Model High School, has been named a finalist in the area of Agriculture Research, Biotechnology, and Science. Thomas has been invited to participate in the summer program from June 16-July 13.

The program is a residential educational experience for skilled, knowledgeable, and talented high school sophomores and juniors. He will attend classes in the morning and afternoons and participate in a wide variety of social and instructional opportunities every evening.  Meals and rooms are provided by the program.

Model High School’s Sadie Haynes and Aidan Fuller have been selected as alternates in the areas of Communicative Arts and Spanish, respectively.  Pepperell High School’s Ryder Ashmore has been selected as an alternate in the area of Theatre Performance.  Students are chosen from the alternate list to fill slots that may open over the next few weeks.  Approximately 20 alternates are invited most years across a variety of academic and artistic majors.  All alternate offers will be made by May 31, 2024.

GHP is a four-week summer instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students with challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year.

During the afternoons, students choose one of the other areas to study. The curriculum in all areas is challenging and engaging. Evenings are filled with seminars, activities, concerts, and performances.

Each applicant must go through a very extensive selection process to be invited to participate in the program. Transcripts of grades and records, nomination forms, endorsements, and other pertinent information are submitted to substantiate the nominations and the students must interview with a local screening committee.

Major instructional areas are agricultural research, biotechnology and science, communicative arts, computer science, dance, engineering, mathematics, music, science, social studies, theatre performance, visual arts, and world languages. Students also select a minor area outside their major area of study. These include all the major instructional areas as well as additional offerings that reflect the interests and abilities of the instructional staff.

Congratulations to the following state finalists and alternates for GHP.
