Media release from Rome, GA City Schools:
Football season is right around the corner, and Rome City Schools would like to invite everyone to come out to Barron Stadium on Friday, Aug. 1, for a chance to see football teams from the sixth grade all the way to the varsity squad take the field in the Soap Game.
The game has become an annual tradition, allowing fans to gain entry into the contests by purchasing supplies to help out with the squads, including sports drink mix, towels, and laundry detergent. Due to local stores having a limited supply of drink mix, there will be some available for purchase at the gate.
The games begin at 4:30 p.m. when the sixth grade squad will play against the seventh grade team. At 5 p.m., the seventh grade team meets the eighth grade team, and at 5:30 p.m., the eighth grade squad plays the freshmen.
The freshmen will take on the sophomores at 6 p.m., and the varsity special teams will hit the field at 6:30 p.m. before the varsity offense and defense face off at 6:45 p.m.
Each team will play two 10-minute quarters.
This is a rare opportunity to see several football players from middle school to high school. It also gives fans a chance to see Rome High School’s varsity squad before they take on Douglas County in next week’s scrimmage. Rome kicks off the regular season on Friday, Aug. 15, in the Corky Kell Dave Hunter Classic versus Creekside at Barron Stadium at 8 p.m.
