September is observed as National Preparedness Month. The purpose of the observance is to urge communities to prepare for disasters and emergencies, says Tim Herrington, Director of the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency.
National Preparedness Month is an ideal time to research hazards that are common to this area – like flooding, tornadoes, and even winter weather – and prepare for them, says Herrington.
Herrington also suggests that families review (or create) and practice their emergency preparedness plans, update preparedness kits, and get an NOAA Weather Radio.
Community members may download the Floyd EMA mobile app from the Apple App Store or Google Play to get additional preparedness tips.
