GIRL SCOUTS PLAN TO CLOSE CAMP MISTY MOUNTAIN IN ARMUCHEE

Media release from Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta:

On Tuesday, Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta (GSGATL) announced the planned closure of Camp Misty Mountain in Armuchee, Georgia.  The decision to close a camp is not made easily or quickly. Following a multi-year evaluation, a dedicated task force, comprised of board members, volunteers, staff, and current members, recommended the closure of the 54-year-old resident camp. Factors contributing to this decision include steeply increasing repair and maintenance costs of the 800-acre camp.

The closure will enable the Girl Scout council to redirect these resources to two remaining year-round, outdoor properties: Camp Timber Ridge (Mableton, GA) and Camp Meriwether (Luthersville, GA). Enhancing these properties will ensure they continue to meet the evolving needs of current and future Girl Scouts.

Camp Misty Mountain and Lake Marvin will remain open for activities through early spring. Any troops with summer 2026 camp reservations are being contacted with additional information and offered space at either Camps Timber Ridge or Meriwether.

“We are grateful to everyone who helped shape generations of Girl Scouts through their dedication to Camp Misty Mountain,” said Jai Ferrell, CEO of Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. “The camp’s spirit will continue to inspire us as we create new opportunities for girls to explore the outdoors and build courage, confidence, and character. We also thank the people of Floyd, Chattooga and Gordon counties, our neighbors and friends, for more than 50 years.”
As information becomes available, GSGATL will update the Camp Misty Mountain website with the latest on the closure, including a planned closing ceremony to honor the campsite.
