Media release from MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS:
MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS is now celebrating its 52nd Year (1974-2025), and its third annual performance in Rome, GA will be at 1:00 pm on December 13th at the Patio of Courtyard Marriott Rome on the Riverwalk as part of the “Courtyard Holiday Celebration”.
MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS concerts are presented annually in over 300 cities throughout the United States and in several foreign countries to recognize Dr. Harvey G. Phillips, who created TUBACHRISTMAS as an annual event honoring his teacher, the great tubist William J. Bell (born Christmas Day, 1902). Every Christmas season tuba and euphonium players of all ages, from specific geographic areas, gather to pay respect to Harvey G. Phillips, William J. Bell, music educators, and to all tuba and euphonium players who share their heritage. Every TUBACHRISTMAS performance features traditional Christmas Carols arranged especially for the first TUBACHRISTMAS, December 22, 1974 performed on “The Rink at Rockefeller Center” by American composer Alec Wilder, paying tribute to composers who have embraced these noble instruments with solo and ensemble compositions. TUBACHRISTMAS ensembles attract performers aged 8 to 92 years! The warm toned, smooth organ sounds of the tuba-euphonium choir make a TUBACHRISTMAS concert an established Christmas tradition in cities throughout the world.
Tuba and euphonium players of any age, who wish to participate in this third annual TubaChristmas Rome, please assemble on Saturday December 13th at the Coosa Ballroom of the Courtyard Marriott beginning at 10:15 am for registration ($15 participation fee) and rehearsal at 11:00 am. Dress in bright, festive, holiday attire and decorate your instrument. Please bring a music stand. If you own the music book “Carols for a Merry TubaChristmas”®, please bring it with you. Music books will be available for loan or may be purchased ($20 or $25). If you need music prior to the event, email a request to [email protected] and someone will assist you. The performance will be on the patio of the Courtyard Marriott at 1:00 pm. This year Dr. Sam Baltzer, who is the Artistic Director of R.O.M.E., Inc. will be the Host and Emcee of our event. The Guest Conductor will be Dr. Casey Thomas, who is an Assistant Professor and advisor for low brass at Jacksonville State University, music director for The Brass Band of Huntsville, AL, and Bass Trombonist for the Rome, GA Symphony Orchestra. Casey, a product of Cedartown, GA, is well-known to the music community of Northwest Georgia and will bring some new twists to our event. This year Merry TubaChristmas Rome is being supported in part by the Rome Area Council for the Arts, The Band Instrument Repair Academy, and The Courtyard by Marriott Rome.
