It’s been a major topic throughout the week in this community and around a lot of the country – the potential for Winter weather this weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for our area that will be in effect from 1 am on Saturday until 10 am on Monday. There is potential for all types of precipitation to include snow and particularly ice, but the Thursday morning NWS forecast calls primarily for rain this weekend.
Many local schools have opted to cancel events for this upcoming weekend as a precautionary measure.
There are ways to be prepared for whatever type of precipitation is ahead for us. Keith Mickler, UGA Extension agent for Floyd County, recommends the purchase of calcium chloride or potassium chloride in case you are in need of a de-icer. These are much better de-icing solutions than rock salt.
Mickler also suggests the use of cat litter to provide traction on icy sidewalks, driveways, and roads.
Another way to prepare for any type of inclement weather is to download the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency’s mobile app. It is available free of charge at Google Play and the Apple App Store and offers a wealth of Winter preparedness tips.
