New Echota – Cherokee Capital Hosts Super Museum Sunday

New Echota-Cherokee Capital State Historic Site will be hosting Super Museum Sunday on February 8^th, 2026, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Super Museum Sunday is an annual statewide event started in the 1980s by the Georgia Historical Society as part of the annual Georgia History Festival.

Since the inauguration of the event in the 1980s, thousands of visitors have participated that would not normally visit these sites. What started as a small effort to encourage the public to explore local history has grown into a large-scale effort across the state. Today over a hundred sites that include city, county, and state facilities participate to make history and nature more accessible without the restraints of admission fees. This event acts as a ‘teaser’ and encouragement to explore local, state, and national history as well as a celebration of our state’s rich and diverse history.

Visitors and participants to the various sites can expect to find Rangers, docents, and volunteers presenting history and nature in a way that engages visitors to learn more about the world around them. Sites such as New Echota-Cherokee Capital State Historic Site and the Chief Vann House State Historic Site will be presenting the history of the Cherokee tribe through tours and demonstrations.

New Echota demonstrations will include Cherokee weaponry, weaving, early 1800s printing, and cast-iron cooking while visitors at the Chief Vann can enjoy a Ranger-guided tour of the brick plantation house built by James Vann, a Cherokee planter. All participating sites are offering free admission all day on Saturday, February 8^th.
