Media release from Georgia Northwestern Technical College:
Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) has announced the 2025 recipients of the Judge Dan Peace Winn Scholarship.
The Judge Dan Peace Winn Scholarship supports Polk County residents or those with a connection to Polk County, who are completing a degree, diploma or certificate at GNTC. The scholarship was established by the family of the late judge who passed away in 2016 at age 94.
“The Winn Family is continuing their father’s legacy in such a meaningful, impactful manner. With the help of the Judge Dan Peace Winn Scholarship, GNTC students from Polk County will be supported for generations to come,” said GNTC President Dr. Heidi Popham. “Georgia Northwestern Technical College is deeply grateful.”
GNTC students Luke Evans, who studies Aviation Maintenance Technology, and Kai Terry, who studies Practical Nursing, have received the 2025 scholarship. Both students attend GNTC’s Floyd County Campus in Rome.
“Our father felt very strongly about the value of an education,” Frank Winn said. “He made sure we got the opportunity to continue our education after high school. He lived in Cedartown, Polk County, for over 65 years, so we wanted the scholarship to help people in the area around Polk County.”
Judge Winn, a veteran of World War II, and graduate from Emory University Law School, served in several elected roles including City Court solicitor, as well as solicitor general for the Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit. In 1966, he began serving as a Superior Court judge and was assigned to the Tallapoosa Judicial Circuit, which includes Polk County. He retired in 1988 and became a senior judge for the State of Georgia until his death.
