TALKING TURKEY WITH THE ROME-FLOYD FIRE DEPARTMENT

It is time to talk turkey. If you have a turkey in the freezer and plan to cook it in the deep fryer for Thanksgiving, be sure that you thaw it out in advance of the big day in order to prevent a dangerous fire or explosion. This message is from the Rome-Floyd Fire Department.

Shasta Farrer, Life and Fire Safety Educator, says that turkeys need 24 hours of thawing time in the refrigerator per five pounds.

Make sure that your turkey is completely thawed before you fry it. Putting a frozen turkey into a deep fryer could lead to a disaster as oil and water do not mix, attests Farrer, who suggests writing a reminder on your calendar of the appropriate date to thaw your turkey. That way you won’t be likely to forget!
