There is nothing like a live Christmas tree at this time of year. However, they can be dangerous.
Shasta Farrer, Life and Fire Safety Educator for the Rome-Floyd County Fire Department, urges families to ensure that live trees have plenty of water, as a dehydrated tree can burn faster than a piece of newspaper.
And always turn Christmas tree lights off before going to bed or leaving the house, exhorts Farrer, who hopes to avoid tragedies as people are sleeping or away from home.
It is also important to keep trees away from any heat source, like fireplaces or heat vents.
Be sure to responsibly dispose of live Christmas trees upon the end of the holiday season. Rome and Floyd County residents have the option to “Bring One for the Chipper”! The annual tree recycling event is slated for Saturday, January 3rd from 9 am to noon in the parking lot of the Home Depot on Hicks Drive.
