February is American Heart Month, an annual observance intended to raise awareness of cardiovascular health.
Making sure that your blood pressure is under control, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, quitting smoking, getting enough sleep – these are all habits that can boost heart health, according to Dr. Gary Voccio, the Health Director for the Georgia Department of Public Health’s 10-county Northwest Health District. He adds that heart disease is among the leading causes of mortality in the U.S.
Good oral health is also important to your heart – and your overall health, states Dr. Voccio.
In addition to raising awareness of heart health during American Heart Month, Dr. Voccio says that NWGA Public Health is currently encouraging people of the district to get vaccinated against influenza and other viruses as cold and flu season continues for several more weeks.
