Members of the United States Air Force Thunderbirds arrived in Rome, GA on Tuesday afternoon ahead of their appearance in the Spring edition of the Wings Over North Georgia air show this weekend.
This marks the fourth WONG appearance for the Thunderbirds, but the first time that they have been able to land at Rome’s Russell Regional Airport due to a recent runway extension.
Major Brandon Maxson, Right Wing Pilot in the #3 jet, says that the team is excited to interact with locals this week.
The Thunderbirds will carry out its mission to recruit, retain, and inspire via low, fast, and often tight flight demonstrations, according to Major Maxson, who adds that it takes a lot of teamwork to accomplish this mission.
Maxson is an F-15 and F-35 pilot that transitioned to an F-16 Fighting Falcon as a member of the Thunderbirds. He says that the team’s jets can be combat-ready within 72 hours but are currently adjusted for the air show circuit.
The public may witness the precision of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and a host of other performers at Wings Over North Georgia ’26, which will take place Friday and Saturday. Air show weekend will include a Friday Twilight Show with drones and fireworks. All tickets must be purchased in advance at www.wingsovernorthgeorgia.com.
