Media release from the Rome Symphony Orchestra:
The Rome Symphony Orchestra (RSO) will engage the community in an evening of bold and dramatic symphonic storytelling with its presentation of “Schubert Symphony No. 4” at the Rome City Auditorium on Saturday, April 18, at 7 p.m. Completed in 1816, when Franz Schubert was just 19 years old, the “Tragic” Symphony — a designation the Austrian composer chose himself — represents the moment he first channeled the dramatic intensity of Beethoven into his own lyrical and expansive voice. While the influence of Beethoven is unmistakable in the composition’s urgency and bold dynamic contrasts, the voice that emerges is distinctively Schubert: lyrical, expansive, and deeply expressive.
“Written at a crucial time in his creative development, the exquisite Fourth Symphony bridges Schubert’s youthful Classical style and the more personal, emotionally driven symphonic language of his later works,” said Jeffrey Dokken, Music Director and Conductor of the Rome Symphony Orchestra. “This will be a journey of high-stakes emotion, leading our listeners from the depths of C minor into a finale of radiant, triumphant light.”
Additional highlights include a side-by-side performance between the RSO and the Rome Youth Symphony Orchestra, as well as appearances by winners of the RSO’s Young Artist Competition: high school student Rileigh Wiebers, first place, instrumental division; Berry College junior Iley Barnes, first place, vocal division; and Berry College sophomore Lauren Sweat, runner-up, vocal division.
“The RSO could not be more excited to feature these three young virtuosos,” said Dokken. “We’ll experience the power and precision that makes Rileigh a true rising star as she performs the first movement of the Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor. From our competition’s vocal division, Iley’s versatility and artistry will be on full display as she performs Tchaikovsky’s ‘Chanson Triste’ and Schubert’s ‘Gretchen am Spinnrade.’ Lauren will delight the audience with her beautiful rendition of ‘Se come voi piccina io fossi’ from Puccini’s ‘Le Villi.’”
Doors for the April 18 concert open at 6 p.m. While tickets will be available at the performance, guests are encouraged to purchase them in advance at www.RomeSymphony.org or by calling 706-291-7967.
