Coverage requirements vary by state, and college students often find themselves driving friends around campus or borrowing someone’s car. Families should understand how those situations may affect their insurance protection. They should also ask about available savings opportunities, including good student discounts.

Parents should consider how much it would cost to replace everything in a dorm room or apartment if it were stolen or damaged.

AAA recommends creating a digital inventory of belongings, including photos and receipts when possible.
