What happens when a supernatural encounter in a Waffle House leads to an unexpected journey of faith, humor, heartbreak and hope? Georgia author Lauretta Hannon explores that question in her newest book, A Priest Walks into a Waffle House: Stories from a Gritty, Grace-Filled Life. Hannon will celebrate the book’s release with a special launch event on Thursday, September 10, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Broadview Event Venue, located above the History Center at 300 W. 1st St. in downtown Rome.
The Georgia’s Rome Welcome Center and Gift Shop invites the community to meet Hannon, hear her read from her new book and celebrate the release of a memoir that combines humor and heartbreak while encouraging readers to find hope and grace in the messiness of everyday life.
Hannon, acclaimed author of The Cracker Queen: A Memoir of a Jagged, Joy-Filled Life, describes her newest work as a cheeky spiritual memoir with an audacious message of hope. In A Priest Walks into a Waffle House, Hannon explores the idea that joy can emerge from even the deepest struggles and that grace is often found in places we least expect it. The book encourages readers to recognize the goodness around them, embrace their purpose and pursue peace, good cheer and a loving perspective—even during difficult times.

The Rome book launch will feature an author reading at 4:45 p.m., followed by a book signing at 5 p.m. Guests will have the opportunity to meet Hannon and purchase a copy of her new book.
And in keeping with the book’s Waffle House-inspired origin story, Waffle House attire is encouraged. Guests are invited to wear something that represents Waffle House to them—funny, nostalgic or creative. Costume props are welcome, but no real weapons, please.
Lauretta Hannon is a TEDx speaker, bestselling author, and writing teacher. Crowned “The Funniest Woman in Georgia” by Southern Living, she’s been a commentator on NPR’s All Things Considered, and her work has been featured in many national media outlets.
As an added treat, the first 20 people to purchase the book will receive an exclusive gift. The event is hosted by the Georgia’s Rome Downtown Welcome Center & Gift Shop; the event is free and open to the public.
