There are still a few weeks left in the Summer. As long as the temperatures remain warm, locals will likely continue to spend time on area waterways as a way to beat the heat.
The Coosa River Basin Initiative highly recommends that revelers make sure that rivers, lakes, etc. are safe for recreation via its Swim Guide.
Courtnee Davenport, Outreach Programs Manager, says that the non-profit will continue to collect water samples from 29 sites across the Coosa River Basin for the Swim Guide through Labor Day weekend, and these samples will be tested for harmful E. coli. Test results will be posted every Friday at www.coosa.org. Green sites indicate “low” levels of E. coli and are suitable for recreation. Red sites have a “high” level of E. coli, and visitors should use extra caution or avoid that site.
Exercise caution amid any rainfall, warns Davenport, who adds that bacterial levels tend to rise with heavy rainfall.
People are still enjoying time on the water, attests Davenport.
Water monitoring is just one of the objectives of the CRBI, whose mission is to protect, preserve, and restore the biologically diverse upper Coosa River basin. Visit the website to get more information and/or to join.
