Media release from Floyd County, GA Schools:
Floyd County Schools (FCS) has officially been named the Georgia Charter System of the Year. The prestigious award was announced on Wednesday during the annual Georgia Charter System Conference in Athens, Georgia, recognizing the district’s deliberate focus on building a unified, community-centered culture.
A charter system since 2010, FCS earned the statewide honor by using its charter flexibility to reshape its organizational identity, maximize all academic efforts, modernize communication channels, and unite the district under a shared collaborative front.
In addition to receiving the award, FCS leadership presented a featured session titled “Success Is Not An Accident” at the conference, highlighting how aligned strategy and intentional dialogue drive long-term district progress.
“Charter flexibility gives us the structure to innovate, but true progress happens when every school and community partner moves together as one unified front,” said Mr. John Parker, Assistant Superintendent of Floyd County Schools. “We used our charter status as an opportunity to rebrand who we are around a single, shared purpose: Fostering Community Success. Receiving this award reflects the strength of our teachers, administrators, Local School Governance Teams, and community members working side by side.”
Key Highlights Behind the Recognition
- Purposeful Community Collaboration: Through initiatives like the inaugural FCS Stakeholder Leadership Academy and active Local School Governance Teams (LSGTs), the district built direct avenues for ongoing collaboration. These spaces bring community members into meaningful discussions surrounding school goals, instruction, and local decision-making.
- Fiscal Stewardship & Open Accounting: FCS maintains long-term financial health by self-funding academic and facility investments debt-free while implementing its lowest millage tax rate in 25 years—sharing financial priorities openly with taxpayers to maintain community trust.
- Charter-Driven Identity & Unified Front: FCS leveraged its charter status to unify district identity and bring every campus under a shared vision. The district aligned its focus around Fostering Community Success, creating a strong, cohesive front for students and families.
- Modernized Communication Approaches: The district evolved its communication strategy to foster deeper connection and trust. By replacing traditional top-down announcements with multi-channel outreach, responsive dialogue, and clear feedback loops, FCS ensured families and staff stay informed, valued, and connected.
- Record-Breaking Academic Growth: FCS utilizes Broad Title 20 charter flexibility to implement hybrid schedules, class-size waivers, and dedicated literacy and math interventionists pushing directly into core classrooms. On the 2026 Georgia Milestones assessments, FCS students outperformed state averages across all 13 tested subjects, contributing to a 97.2% district graduation rate.
- National Scholastic Recognition: FCS was recognized as one of only 100 school districts nationwide in a study by Harvard, Yale, and Dartmouth for surpassing pre-pandemic achievement levels in reading and math.
The FCS conference session, “Success Is Not An Accident,” outlined how transparent communication, shared leadership models, and active partnerships with over 150 local businesses and organizations create a sustainable foundation for student success.
District leadership extends its gratitude to the teachers, staff, students, and community partners across Floyd County. This recognition reflects what is possible when a school district uses its charter freedom to build a unified front and redefine what it means to foster community success together.
